Why use the English Accent Detector?

Classify your variety

Unlike generic accent tests, this tool specifically classifies which of 10 native or widespread English varieties you sound closest to — not just whether you sound "native".

See the phonetic signals

The result explains which features pointed to your variety — rhoticity, vowel quality, the trap-bath split, stress timing, and more — with specific words from your recording.

Jump straight to comparisons

Each result links to side-by-side comparison pages so you can study exactly how your variety differs from any other English accent.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from the Accent Test?

The Accent Test identifies your L1 (native language) background — it tells ESL learners whether they sound Spanish, Russian, Chinese, etc. The English Accent Detector tells you which English variety you sound closest to — British, American, Indian, Nigerian, and so on. Use the Accent Test if you're learning English; use the Detector if you want to know which English variety you speak.

How many English varieties does it support?

Ten: British (RP), American (General), Australian, Canadian, Indian, Nigerian, Irish, Scottish, South African, and New Zealand. The model will also suggest a sub-region (like "Yorkshire" or "South Indian") when the signal is strong enough.

Is the test free?

Yes, completely free. No signup or account required. Your audio is sent for analysis and immediately deleted — we never store voice recordings.

How accurate is it?

Accuracy is highest when you read the full passage clearly and naturally. The diagnostic passage is engineered to expose the phonetic features that distinguish English varieties (rhoticity, the trap-bath split, the GOAT vowel, retroflex consonants, etc.), so a complete reading typically gives confidence scores in the 70-95% range. Short or unclear readings reduce confidence.
