Would You Get a Golden Ticket on American Idol?

Judged the way Idol judges listen: pitch first, a recording-artist tone rather than karaoke, a story in the lyric, a song that fits you, and composure.

What this panel listens for

  • Pitch. "Pitchy" is the house word and the most common reason for a no.
  • A recording-artist tone, not a cover-band or karaoke tone.
  • Storytelling: a connection to the lyric and a reason you chose the song.
  • A song that fits the voice; over-reaching reads as "the song is too big for you".
  • Composure: nerves show up as rushed tempo and shallow breath.

Video or open-call round first, then producer rounds, then 60–90 seconds a cappella or self-accompanied in front of the judges, who may stop you or ask for a second song. The age window is roughly 15–28.

What to sing

A song you can own with a personal arrangement, one contrast (soft verse, full chorus), and only runs you can land. Avoid the most-sung diva ballads. Examples: Alive (Sia), Traitor (Olivia Rodrigo), Simple Man, Wicked Game, You Say.

Why singers use the Audition Readiness Test

Judged like the real panel

Each audition has its own profile: what the casting team or coaches actually listen for, their hard bars, and the phrases they use.

One honest scale

Scores use the same seven-axis rubric as Rate My Singing, so your numbers mean the same thing across every test on the site.

Free, private, repeatable

No signup. Record as many takes as you like, fix the two things that matter, and watch your readiness climb.

Frequently asked questions

What does "karaoke" mean as feedback?

That the performance copies the original record instead of showing an artist. This test weighs tone and expression heavily for that reason, and the fixes will often be about phrasing you own.

I am over 28. Can I still use this test?

Of course. The verdict is about the voice. The real show has an age window, so if you are outside it the verdict still tells you where you stand for other auditions.

What should I record?

30 to 60 seconds of the part of a song that shows you best, a cappella or with a quiet backing track, in a quiet room with the phone about 30 cm from your mouth. Each page suggests what to sing.

Does my age change the verdict?

If you tell us your age band, the judge compares you with what a voice that age can do, and younger singers get a small allowance on the readiness bar. The Voice Kids page is judged on a child's scale by default.
